TL;DR: 95% potty-trained brindle puppy with a rough start in life
[See video below for Bean's progress]
We found Bean when he was less than a week old. He was weak and covered in fire ants. His mum was nowhere in sight, and his 2 other littermate were found dead nearby.
We took him to the vet as we found some maggots on him. He had fleas, maggot infestation and bronchitis. Our vet sent him home with medication to help him get well. A week later, his skin started to become yellow and crusty. And off we go to the vet again.
Bean was diagnosed with mange, but he also had pus-filled wounds under his skin. The wounds covered about 80% of his body. The cause of the wounds is undetermined. It could be a very bad case of mange or wounds from the fire ants bites. Bean needed to shed this layer of skin/fur to heal.
He was treated with another round of antibiotics to help him fight the infections. These photos show Bean at various stages of recovery. He was miserable and in pain, especially at the start. At every feeding, we’ll find chunks of dead skin in his bedding. And sometimes the dead skin will fall off when holding him. This shedding process lasted for about 2-3 weeks. At the end of it, he’s left with only about 20% of his fur.
Soon enough new hair started to appear on his hairless body. Bean slowly became happier and more playful. He’s now 8 weeks old, and about 95% of his fur is back. He still have some small bald spots, but our vet thinks the hair will come back soon enough. He just had his first vaccination and he’s also dewormed.
We’ve been training Bean for about 2 weeks now, and he’s shown good progress. He’s learning basic command: Come, Sit, Down, Hand, Wait. Watch video below on his training progress.
He’s about 95% toilet trained to pee/poo on pee pads. He tends to forget when he’s excited and playing, that’s when he’ll have an accident. But with constant reminders to ask him to go potty when he’s excited, and you’ll see accidents rate drastically falls.
Bean is loving, attentive, playful and mischievous at times. He loves to explore the living space, sometimes tries to push boundaries. But he responds to a stern No. He plays with our dog Bobo, and tries to play with our cats too. One of our cats will sometimes entertain his play invite. He loves interacting with us humans, and likes to follow us around the house to observe what we’re doing.
He has a beautiful brindle coat, weighs close to 4kg as of this writing. Our vet says he has the built to grow into a medium-large dog. Likely to be more than 20kg when he fully matures.
Bean is looking for a loving forever home. If you have space in your home and your heart, get in touch with us. Tell us about your family and the household Bean will be living in.
