After few interviews with potential adopters but sadly, no adoption, my cousin sister make the decision to sent Coco to SPCA Penang as its nearer to her house rather than taking care of her in another friend's house so as she can drop by to see her. That was Monday 1st Dec'08. Today she called up SPCA Penang to follow up and SHOCKINGLY, Coco is already being put-down. So, my advice to ALL, placing animals in SPCA equal "guiding them to Heaven".
Its indeed SAD as this is the so called "rescue society" for dogs & cats. My heart truly breaks, hearing my cousin crying on the phone as she truly felt betrayed by the society that she trusted.

Afterall, my cousin can take care of Coco for 2 months but SPCA only give Coco, 2 days.

Is this the society that we should be charitable to?

Let me say a few words here. SPCA is a shelter for animals but the numbers are increasing by day. Where in the world doo we find space to put all the dogs? They would definitely have to put down sick, old and also those that they feel cannot be rehomed dogs. They are not a nursing home where you pay monthly for them to take care of your dogs. This may sound harsh but it is a fact. If you surrender your pup/dog there then it is up to them on what to do with the dog. If you want to make sure that the dog is well for it's life the best way is still to keep it yourself and maybe rehome it to a home which you think is best. If you pass to another person or rescue society, the fate of the pup lies on their hands.

Sometimes i prefer not to rescue, I will just catch, spay and release the dog. Since I lack the space. If i send to any shelter then it's like i am deciding on their fate for them. I rather let them be on the streets and if they are caught or knocked down it is their fate and may they not be reborn as a stray anymore. Spaying them will ensure that you won't see the next generation there anymore.

jdaniely, you should NOT have sent the puppy to SPCA. do you know how many animals they receive everyday? space is lacking and food is not free. their resources are LIMITED and so is each animal's time at the shelter. you can't expect SPCA to take care of your surrendered puppy indefinitely. you are the one responsible for it. don't blame the shelter.

So sad! i thought spca only put down sick old doggies, but not young healthy puppies?

and how on earth spca expect for someone to adopt coco in 2 days.

unfortunately not all the dogs they receive are sick and old. they receive sooo many every month. numbering into the hundreds. all different ages and in different conditions. the number brought to spca, highly outnumbers the number adopted from spca.. get what i mean? let's say this month people send them 400 dogs, maybe only 50 will be adopted.. so the number of dogs keep on increasing and increasing. people need to stop breeding their dogs and buying from pet shops. they really need to adopt from shelters to save lives.

healthy young puppies need the most care and that can't be provided at the shelter. puppies are best taken care of by outside fosterers. i don't know about spca penang, but at spca selangor what they will do is try to find outside fosterers for the puppies, to take care of the puppies until they are old enough to be vaccinated. this increases their chances of not falling sick at the shelter. puppies are susceptible to all kinds of illnesses due to their weak immune systems and really, the shelter is THE WORST place for a young puppy. unfortunately there aren't enough fosterers to take care of all the puppies they receive. i'll have you know that even spca staff members foster as many as they can in their own homes. so please don't criticize them before you know what they go through for the ones they do manage to save. thanks for your understanding.

The puppy was taken into care by my cousin at the age of 2 mths +. She take care of her for another 2 mths, with visit to vet and already vaccinated.
I've NO hard feeling for SPCA S'gor but I'm just dissapointed with SPCA Penang for giving such a short period "chance" to Coco.
There's no indicating of "indefinate" period as you've noticed, my cousin follow up to know the well being of Coco. Anyhow, she just felt that she had killed Coco and I'm trying my best to console her.
I agree with Siew Yen that sometimes we should just let them go back to the street or jungle after nursing them back to healthy dog and spaying them. Seems that the best that we can do.

enthunized is better than get knocked by car, or abused...or maybe eaten by those foreigners...

at least in the future, you won't suprisingly see coco being abandoned by the one who adopted her; you don't need to worry her hungers everyday, or, at least you know now, she's gone in a peace and safe condition, more importantly, a painless condition...

But perhaps maybe she contracted something from one of the animals there and had to be put down.

It;s already done with so there's nothing more anyone of us can do about it. Don't take it out on yourself.

If you ever need help adopting out a pet, I'll try to help out and spread the word.
