Coco: Velcro dog with an expressive face and a tail that can knock you over Smart and eager to please, Coco will steal your heart and your blanket

This is Coconut, or Coco as she has come to be known. She is the very good-est of all good girls and is in need of a new family to spoil her with love. Her super affectionate, cuddly, gentle and intelligent nature would suit a couple or family with children over the age of 5 (she has a strong tail wag that may knock little ones over). A single person with extra love to give would also be a good fit for her. We are devastated to part with her. She is 3 1/2 years old, a medium sized mixed breed, weighing 16.5kg. She is an inside only dog, though she does enjoy an occasional sunbathe outside, and gets very excited for her daily walk.

Coco’s favourite part of any day is when her humans arrive home. She will great you with intense wiggles, full helicopter tail wags, and a few chats, ready to give you her favourite toy as a gift to celebrate your homecoming. Her second favourite times of the day are mealtimes, her daily walk or run, and snuggles with you on the couch where she must be physically touching you at all times. If one of her humans is home during the day, she will want to curl up in her favourite donut shape next to your desk or wherever you are spending the day. She just wants to know you’re nearby. Growing up during covid lockdowns, she is a bit of a velcro dog, and may need the reassurance of your proximity during a thunder storm.

She is very gentle, and has lived with Guinea pigs before (regular nose boops were had), and is happy to share spaces with cats. While she loves greeting and playing with other dogs, she may become a little overwhelmed by too much excitement from more energetic dogs. If you have an older dog/s, she would be a perfect companion for them.

The smartest of the litter, Coco maintains incredible focus and eye contact. She has mastered a large number of commands, and also responds to many spoken conversations and question prompts. While she is very food motivated, her training is largely praise based - she wants to please her family. Though her soulful eyes will gaze pleadingly into your soul when you’re eating something that she would like to taste. She will wait ever so patiently for you to give her a nibble. Born with a few extra wrinkles around her face, she has an incredible range of facial expressions that will melt your heart and crack you up. Her greatest weakness is the nail clippers. And though, like all of us, she will make a mistake here and there, she will immediately look comically sheepish or embarrassed, and show you her tummy for belly rubs as her way of saying sorry.

Coco’s super short, spotty coat is perfect for Malaysian weather and is incredibly easy to maintain. She does not need any brushing or trips to the groomer, and only requires a weekly bath/shower. Like all dogs, she does shed, though loses much less fur than thicker coated dogs. Her fur also brushes straight off any clothing, so no need for a lint roller. Her fur is super soft and feels like velvet under your fingers, which is just as well, because she requires all the pats, all the time.

While she technically started her life as a ‘rescue’, she has never been a street dog. Our family fostered her, and her brother and sister from 6 weeks of age. While her siblings found new homes when they were old enough, she found a place in our hearts and quickly became our third child. She has lived her entire life without ever being yelled at or hit, but instead has been surrounded by love, clear boundaries and plenty of positively reinforced training. As a result she has a very calm demeanour, and listens carefully for softly spoken commands or instructions. She has no bad behaviours, she never chewed any furniture during her puppy teething stages, and has never shown any aggression or biting tendencies. While she will give an occasional bark at the doorbell, passers-by, or fireworks, she is by no means a guard dog or protector. Once anyone enters your house, she will happily meet them and then leave them be while she gets back to the important task of napping. She is very well toilet trained and will even come and fix you with an intense stare or herd you to the door when she needs to go. She is fully leash trained and knows to heel on a walk or run, though may get distracted by all the interesting smells.

Coco has the majestic look of a liver spotted dalmation and streamlined athletic body of a whippet or sighthound in her. While she needs some form of daily exercise, she is equally a big couch potato, or even a bed potato if she is allowed. Be warned, her cuddle tactics and attempts to steal your warmth, often result in her stealing the blanket too. If you have a no bed rule, she will happily sleep on her own bed just outside your door. She has not been crate trained, though this is 100% a failing on our part, not hers.

If Coco is so wonderful, why are we looking for a new home for her? Our family is moving back home to Australia, which has very strict quarantine laws. Since welcoming Coco into our lives, the Australian government has specifically banned the importing of pets from Malaysia. We have thoroughly considered all our options to take her home with us, including fostering her in another country for 6 months. But we have realised that this lengthy and difficult process would not be fair on her and would likely be too traumatic for her to go through. We are utterly heartbroken and we need to find a new home for her that will be filled with love.
