Overall description: low maintenance, lots of attention not required, however specific environment is required, very fluffy
Care sheet:
•Must be kept in a cool environment
•Out of sunlight with constant air conditioning
•Their coats are very thick and chinchillas do not sweat so they need to be at a coom temperature (approx 18-26 celsius)
•Cage lining should be changed/cage should be cleaned once a week
•There is a lot of poop because of their herbivorous diet, but it is dry and can be swept easily
•Cage lining can be made from cloth old towels (can be washed and is preferable) or using commercial litter
•If you use wood shavings be careful of the wood used as some are toxic
•Linen/cloth litter is preferable
•They are not potty trained but tend to pee in the same area and it is fairly easy to clean
•Teeth maintenance
•They need to be provided with sticks/specific pet store approved granite to shave down their teeth
•This is crucial as their teeth do not stop growing
•Warning: They will chew everything
•Dust bath
•They should be dust bathed 1-2 times a week
•Simply put chinchilla dust (Oxbow Poof! Is the best brand) into a container and let them roll around in it for 10-30 minutes and then remove
•Chinchillas CANNOT BE WET as their fur is so thick that they can contract illness and bacteria, therefore dust baths are crucial
•Food
•Fresh hay and chinchilla pellets should be provided once a day, a bowl of pellets for each chinchilla and some fresh hay
•Some edible flowers and nettle leaves can be given as a treat (CHECK before giving it to them)
•Rosehips make for good treats
•Illness
•Chinchillas do not frequently get ill, they do not contract fleas and are usually easy to take care of here
•However, if they lose weight rapidly, stop eating or become lethargic, then they should be taken to the vet
•Nocturnal
•Chinchillas are nocturnal/crepuscular and so are mostly awake at night
•Exercise
•They should be let out often to run around, but not too long as they may become fatigued or may chew a lot of things
•An exercise wheel should be used (will be provided)
•They do not like to be carried but will be ok for a fe minutes
•They enjoy jumping (can jump up to 6 feet in the wild) and will often sit on people
