Hi, Lily - I noticed your question about male cats and spraying. The answer is that intact males do spray to mark their territories. The only way to stop them doing it is to neuter them, which stops spraying completely, stops them roaming and getting into fights, has many other health benefits, and also prevents them from fathering countless litters of kittens. Good idea all round! :-)
I believe pet shops sell cleaning agents that can help with the bad smell from tomcat spray. Otherwise, neutering is the only solution I know.
This is from the Cats of Australia web site:
*Can I stop my cat spraying?
Castration of males or spaying of females can reduce the cat’s motivation for spraying.
Early neutering of your kitten will in most cases stop your cat from spraying in the future. Neutering after spraying activity has commenced may reduce it.
For older cats, one study showed that 87% of all male cats stop spraying after castration 78% stop immediately 9% stop in a few months 13% keep spraying
Hi, Lily -- they spray as a way of marking their territory, not at specific times. I've read that they may spray more when they are stressed, or overcrowded, but as far as I know, it's just something that all tomcats do. And some un-spayed queens spray, too.
