Today, one of the most pressing issues plaguing our environment is plastic usage and pollution, especially single-use plastics. A 2019 study showed that Malaysia was responsible for 7.5% of the plastics flowing into the ocean, putting us ahead of even China, a country of 1.4 billion people and a GDP almost 40 times the size of Malaysiaโs. ๐
With circumstances surrounding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, more and more people are opting for take-outs and deliveries. Almost all of our food is wrapped in plastics, and this causes a huge spike in packaging waste. Most of this plastic waste is not properly managed, causing them to leak into our rivers and oceans. ๐
Even though plastic is an important component of modern life, it does not justify the devastating impacts to our rivers. We can make a difference. ๐ In conjunction with World Cleanup Day on 18 September 2021, you can start by organising a clean-up of your nearest river. The goal? To clean up as much litter as possible! Not only will the rivers thank you; the wildlife will too.
