Preliminary Investigations Found That The Pollutio..

“Preliminary investigations found that the pollution was suspected to be caused by the disposal of wastewater from non-industrial premises which carried out maintenance work, causing untreated wastewater to flow into a nearby river.” – https://bit.ly/2VzepJP

We are dismayed by yet another river pollution incident that took place at where we described in 2019 as an environmental crime scene that should be handled by an environmental crime unit under the police. Please see: https://www.wwf.org.my/?26765/Special-Unit-Required-to-Curb-Environmental-Crime Sungai Kim Kim was where illegal dumping of hazardous chemical wastes led to an environmental crisis which threatened the lives of thousands of residents, including vulnerable school children.

Surface water sources such as rivers are where 97% of our raw water supply for agricultural, domestic and industrial needs come from. Sadly, out of convenience, rivers become dumping sites for unscrupulous parties due to apathy towards adverse environmental impacts.

Apart from the ongoing DoE probe, we hope that this case will also be investigated by the Environmental Crime Unit set up last September under police jurisdiction and the perpetrators be brought to justice.

Our stance on this issue remains unchanged: environmental crimes should be tackled with more stringent enforcement measures to correspond with the seriousness of these crimes, the far-reaching impacts and losses to our planet.
