Sunshine Courage, Still Looking For A Home

After 3 months, we still have not succeeded in finding a home for Sunshine. There are updates on Sunshine, if you could please scroll to the bottom of this post.

We’d really appreciate everyone’s help in spreading the news and hopefully, someone, somewhere, will be able to give Sunshine a good home.

First published on 23rd February:

For those who are new to this blog, here is a little bit about the incredible journey of Sunshine Courage, rescued in a paralysed condition (after being severely beaten up by humans in Cheras), passed off as a case for euthanasia by the vet, but because we would not give the order (for euthanasia), our vet suggested non-mainstream treatment. Without wasting any time at all, we gave Sunshine Courage acupuncture, homeopathy, physiotherapy, Chinese medicine, stemcell tech, coupled with the most important factor – lots of tender loving care, dedicated commitment, hardwork and effort from caregiver, Lydia.  And of course, lots of positive vibrations from all our readers too.

We also want to thank Dr Susanna Brida (www.asiapaws.com) for doing Sunshine’s acupuncture treatment for free (we only had to pay the transport fee for the housecalls).

Sunshine Courage is as good as new now and is ready for adoption. She is estimated to be less than 1 year-old, is fully vaccinated and will be spayed soon. She is nothing short of a miracle case – she came with a completely transacted spinal chord, with no deep pain sensation or function in the lower half of her body, but after barely 12 weeks of tender loving and appropriate treatment, she has regained function in her entire body, can walk and run and has proven to be an extremely clean dog and is very intelligent and obedient.

Here are some pictures during Sunshine’s process of recovery. Do a word search on “Sunshine Courage” in this blog to see more:

The seemingly irreversible injury (the transacted spinal chord)

Sunshine was on diapers for a few weeks because she could not control her urination and defecation.
Her elimination functions are now back to normal. No more diapers needed.

Despite it all, she was always a happy dog, living up to her name – Sunshine (even when she was paralysed)!

After regaining the function of her lower half, training began.

 Rehab work on the treadmill.

Strengthening the muscles with daily exercise and physiotherapy.

Sunshine goes for excursions for socialization and some sun!

Sunshine pays me a visit, with Lydia.

The last correction – the knuckling of the hind paw.

I’m as good as new – would anyone like to give me a good home, please?

We think Sunshine got this far so successfully because she had (and still has) a very, very dedicated and experienced caregiver. Also, there is the benefit of youth in her as she is estimated to be less than 1 year old. Young bodies can sometimes repair itself very efficiently, especially when the appropriate treatment is given. In this case, it was acupuncture, physiotherapy, the stemcell tech and all the rest of the non-mainstream treatment we administered for her.

We need your help now to help us look for a home for Sunshine Courage. She has been through so much. Lydia has spent so much of her time, energy and love to nurse Sunshine, literally back from the dead, so to speak.

Please help us forward this link to your friends and family. We believe there is someone, somewhere out there, who may have some affinity with Sunshine and is interested to adopt her.

Last but not least, thank you so much, Lydia.

Interested adopters, please contact me at chankahyein@gmail.com. I will send you an adoption form and Lydia will help in the adoption process.

Updates on 11th May 2012:

First, we’d like to thank Narelle McMurtrie of LASSie and DT for offering to take Sunshine. However, Lydia feels she still prefers that Sunshine be adopted by a family as there are still some issues with her hind paw, which is prone to abrasions:

Sunshine seems to still have some issues with her weaker left hind leg. I’m trying to work out what the problem really is.
Last week she lost a nail off her toe on the weakest left hind foot. It looked fine with just the nail missing with no flesh wound. When we were away for the weekend, she obviously licked it and also possiby chewed at it. When we got back after 2 nights away, the place where the nail was lost had already opened up to a larger wound and half her toe pad was gone. I wash it daily with a warm soak in iodine and she does seem to have reduced sensation as she does not indicate that shee feels any pain from the wound.  I now have her foot bandaged so that her foot can be kept clean and away from flies and maggots and given time to heal.
Again it would be best if she is with a family who can do the routine daily checks on her hind legs to see that she does not does not develop serious abrasions which can lead to infections. If she does have reduced sensation then she can also hurt herself more without realising it and thus the daily checks are important.

Apart from this paw that is prone to abrasions, Sunshine is fit, healthy and a very happy doggie!
