KLANG: Animal lovers are up in arms against a man in Teluk Intan who had allegedly abused a two-month-old puppy.
A video posted on Facebook showed the man allegedly pummelling and hanging the chained-up puppy from a pillar at his home, which has shocked viewers.
Perak Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) officers paid the man a visit on Thursday (July morning, and it is yet to be known if action will be taken against him.
In a subsequent video posted Thursday evening, another man is seen holding the puppy while the alleged animal abuser’s son apologises for his father’s conduct.
There was also insinuation that the man has been “forgiven” for his cruel deed.
Malaysian Animal Welfare Association president S. Mukunan said it would be a very shocking turn of events if the suspect was indeed let off.
“The authorities must enforce the Animal Welfare Act 2015 to bring the suspect to book.
“The suspect had abused the puppy and he must be punished accordingly and not be given room for negotiation,” he added.
Mukunan said the punishment imposed should be a lesson to others who have no qualms about abusing defenceless animals.
Canine welfare organisation Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better director Irene Low said it would be blatantly ludicrous if the authorities did not take action against the suspect.
“Why have legislation encompassing animal abuse in the first place if it is not put to use?
“In the event the Perak DVS does not take any action, then animal activists must collectively refer the case to the DVS headquarters in Putrajaya,” she added.
Animal activist Joanne Low said pets are at their owners’ mercy and hence, cases of abuse must be duly dealt with.
“The authorities must send out a strong message to pet owners that it will not be tolerated if they abuse their animals,” added Low.
She said the onus was on the Perak DVS to initiate action against the suspect.
Perak DVS was not available for comment at press time.
