WWF-Malaysia lauds the Government for laying out strategic plans to combat illegal wildlife trade (IWT) such as:

1. Increasing the number of rangers patrolling forests inhabited by tigers. WWF-Malaysia’s anti-poaching work in Belum-Temengor has shown that ranger presence deters poachers from entering the forests to set snares.

2. Amending the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716). This would see heavier sentences and penalties taken against those found guilty of hunting fully protected wildlife species, including Malayan tigers.

3. Setting up a Wildlife Crime Unit within the purview of the Royal Malaysian Police. A special unit dedicated to investigating IWT would have the capacity and resources to detect complex financial and cyber crimes involving global syndicates.

WWF-Malaysia believes that these action plans are crucial to stop IWT syndicates from laying their hands on our Malayan tigers.
