The final day of the JC3 Conference 2021 started with a keynote address from Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, Bursa Malaysia Chairman and WWF-Malaysia Trustee, and a Call to Action by Tan Sri Jemilah Mahmood, Special Advisor on Public Health to the Malaysian PMO.

According to Tan Sri Wahid, to achieve net zero, countries need to accelerate coal phase-out, renewable energy investment, and optimise energy demand. We need to curtail deforestation and protect nature, which includes the endangered Malayan tiger. Bursa Malaysia will also continue to promote sustainability and drive PLC ESG strength.

In her talk, COVID-19 was just the dress rehearsal, Tan Sri Jemilah stressed that COVID-19 is proof that environmental destruction for the sake of short-term economic growth increases the risk of future pandemics.

The model for economic growth that we have grown accustomed to comes at the cost of massively exceeding our planetary boundaries. Sustainable finance is critical to accelerating climate-adaptation efforts that could mitigate climate impacts and prevent the next disease outbreak.
