Update On Sam. Dr Lian Has Done The 1st Surgery Fo..

Update on Sam :

Dr Lian has done the 1st surgery for Sam – reconstruction right hind distal harris fracture with multiple pins. During the surgery, there eas massive bleeding as the vet need to break away all the callus/new bones to reduct/reconstruct the bones and there was also massive adhesions and muscle injuries. The right hind femur is also shortened with massive callus encircling the distal growth plate fracture fragment and also extends to 1/3 femoral shaft. Generally Sam is doing good after the surgery, PCV increase from 25% to 35%, no fever, appetite still still good, urine – need assistance intermittently, bowel – defecation every other day and most of the time in sternal recumbency or lying down.

For left pelvic fracture, even pelvic canal narrowing, Sam still could defecate quite comfortably at present. There were more risks over benefits to perform pelvic reconstruction surgery for Sam :

1) The fracture has been months old – massive callus formation and soft tissue adhesion at fracture site.

Therefore, complications such as sciatic nerve/descending colon injuries may occur during the attempt to break the callus/reconstruct the fracture

2) Since Sam is having better weight bearing ability on this limb, it will serve as major anchor for his right hindlimb post-surgery rehabilitation.

3) Will proceed to remove the left side femoral head and neck if it is causing pain in future.
