For the 750 rescued dogs at Sasha Pesic’s free-running dog sanctuary in Serbia, second place is a pretty darn good thing. Though they don’t have bowls of their own, they do have enough to eat each day. Though they don’t have individual soft beds, they do sleep on beds of straw. And though they don’t have families of their own, they do have love, protection from the weather and safety here.

So, as the summer heat arrives, we’d like to take them all to the ocean for their very first swim. Since that’s not possible, these sunny pools are bringing so much joy to the pack as they splash and drink and play. Remember, every one of these dogs came from a life where they were either abandoned, beaten, starving or left badly injured on the side of the road.
