PIX NOT OURS AND TAKEN FROM THE INTERNET.

Recently, we were confronted with the deadly distemper which was detected in some of our rescued puppies.

Contrary to the popular misconception that distemper is a death sentence, the viral infection can be countered with swift and correct intervention.

First let us learn what distemper is all about. It would be safe to say that the distemper virus and the human measles virus are cousins. When canines succumb to distemper, it is usually due to some secondary ailment like in most viral infections, where the distemper virus first affects the respiratory system followed by the neurological system of its host.

So when a rescue or a newly acquired pet is down with distemper, you will know if you are observant enough.

Firstly there will be a white discharge from the eyes which will create a kind of whitish lining around the eye followed by nasal discharge. The dog would also have some coughing, fever and at times there is also diarrhea. Generally when we have distemper cases, we immediately take the affected doggo to Klinik Haiwan Wawasan in Puchong for it to be administered the injection they have there for distemper.

After that we find a clinic to isolate the pupper or doggo and usually no clinics will take them in except for a few.

The current clinic we send our distemper cases for admission is Heshmael’s Clinic for Pets in Kota Damansara which takes in distemper cases.

Sometimes we manage to fine a volunteer who can isolate the rescued doggo or pupper in their home.

It is easier to put the infected canine in a cage and place it at the backyard or in an unused bathroom or upstairs balcony.

Our volunteer is able to do it because their pets are fully vaccinated and they ensure that their pets do not come anywhere near the infected one/s.

They also ensure that they spray themselves with the disinfectant that we provide them after handling the infected rescue.

This potent disinfectant is available in Wawasan.

The distemper virus has a short life span and dies when exposed to the sun and therefore sunning the infected animal for about 20 minutes daily is also helpful.

Boiled and blended chicken breast and supplements such as a high dose of vitamin C is essential during recovery and the infected animal must be force fed if it refuses to eat on its own.

We currently have several puppies infected with distemper admitted at Heshmael.

They were ‘rescued’ by some people who did not even want to foster them for a short while. The distemper virus, which lies dormant in canines, is sometimes activated when the animals are put through stress.

Imagine being brought to a place with hundreds of noisy adult dogs which must have terrified these poor puppies.

Hence, the distemper. It would have been better if the puppies were fostered by the rescuers for about two months until they have completed two vaccinations after which we can get them rehomed immediately.

Dear people, this is why we ask that you foster for a short while first before we take over.

It is to save the lives of these pitiful puppies instead of creating a situation of ‘from the frying pan into the fire’ for them.

Thank you for reading

Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better

Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better is a canine welfare programme initiated by non-profit organisation Community Development and Integration Initiative (CDII).
