No tourists in sight, but the dogs keep multiplying on the island of Koh Samui.🐕🐕
In February Soi Dog Foundation, started our much anticipated sterilisation programme in Koh Samui, to help not just the dogs (and the cats) but the community as well, to manage the rising dog population on the island off the eastern coast of Thailand.
Samui, one of the most famous and scenic tourist islands in Thailand, is also home to thousands of dogs. 🏝
Dogs whose population is rising uncontrollably. The animal loving community in Samui were concerned for their welfare and safety, so approached us asking for assistance to spay and neuter.
Despite the many obstacles faced due to the pandemic, a mobile team was able to set up in February, to carry out a 5 month long programme on the island. The team wasted no time and had so far sterilised just shy of 800 animals by the end of the month.
🔸
Soi Dog carried out a similar programme in 2017/2018 in Koh Samui sterilising and vaccinating over 7500 dogs and nearly 500 cats. However, with no structured maintenance plan in place on the island, it did not take too long for the population to hit a peak again.
This time, we are also hoping to bring the animal loving community in Samui together including the animal welfare groups and feeders. An initial workshop in November was held prior to the clinics to empower them with knowledge and best practices on how to carry out a sterilisation maintaince programme in a systematic manner. This is the only way to stay on top of a rising stray animal population.
🔸
Big thank all our supporters from all the over world for their support and helping the dogs and cats of Samui. Your donations help us to carry out these vital projects all over Thailand. To help the end the suffering of the current population and prevent the birth of thousands of unwanted puppies and kittens.
