A First-Time Rescuer In The Making

A young lady, Shalin, called me last night. Shalin knows me as she belongs to the Buddhist youth group whose camps I’ve conducted before.

Shalin picked up a little kitten last night (her very first time) and she did not quite know what to do. The kitten was just lying down and could not walk. Being a first timer, Shalin did not know anything about looking after kittens at all. So I told her the basics – giving glucose water (it was far too late to get kitten milk), no commercial milk for humans, and keeping the kitten warm. I also told her to take the kitten to the vet as soon as she could.

This evening, Shalin called again. Since she had to work, her brother took the kitten to one of the vets in PJ and was told that the kitten had a neural infection. I assume that is an infection of the nerves. The vet prescribed an antibiotic (Beaglobesuspension) and another medicine whose name I did not quite catch on the hone. The vet also said that if the kitten did not respond well, it might be better to have it euthanised.

Shalin did not quite know what to do if the kitten would not respond well, but she said the kitten appears to be a fighter. I said that is good. Rescued animals, particularly, bond with the rescuer very quickly because we are all they have got (and I think they are thankful), so they depend entirely on us. If we have faith, hope and confidence that they will recover, I believe they will fight to live.

So I told Shalin we’ve never ever had to give the other for euthanasia before. Whatever happens, we nurse the animal till the end. So, why not have faith in the medicine first, do the best you can and work for the best?

Shalin agreed, and I asked for a photograph so that I can blog it and I told Shalin we’d all pray for the kitten.

She hasn’t sent me one (I’ve waited this long to write the story because I was waiting for the photo), but never mind, let’s all just pray for this little kitten to fight on, be strong and get well, shall we?
