Pangolin is actually a mammal covered in scales. These scales are made from hard keratin which is the same material as human fingernails. When faced with adversity, pangolins make full use of their tough scaled armor by curling into a ball. Although this defense mechanism is great at deterring predators from attacking them, it also makes them easy targets for humans.

Living on a strict diet of bugs and grubs, pangolins are Mother Nature’s pest control. When foraging for food, they make full use of their long tongue and sharp elongated claws. They often use these claws to dig up the soil and break apart logs to reach colonies of ants and termites. As the land is excavated, the soil is also loosened and aerated, which greatly encourages plant growth.
