LESSON ON COEXISTENCE: NEEDED FOR HUMANS, NOT THE ANIMALS
Our 24-hour wildlife rescue hotline received a call for a mynah who was seen dangling from a HDB unit’s window at Kang Ching Road. The unit’s resident shared that the mynah was caught and hung deliberately as the bird entered his unit. We tried our best to engage and talk, but in vain.
The very stressed mynah was brought back for rest and recovery after which he/she was released back to the wild. NParks is investigating this case.
While urban birds are smart, their main reason to enter units is to often find food. Here are some tips to minimise entry:
1. Managing food waste/crumbs properly, and storing food in cupboards/opaque containers can minimise visits.
2. Hanging shiny Objects (e.g CD) or placing ceramic predatory birds may also deter them from flying into units to some extent.
Even though mynahs are not be protected under the wildlife act, letting a bird dangle under the sun is an act of cruelty, causing unnecessary suffering. You may call our 24hr wildlife rescue hotline 97837782, or email us at acrescrime@gmail.com or report to NParks.
