Malaysia has an extensive coverage of wetlands ranging from coastal mangroves and inland peat swamp forests to rivers in the highlands. It has been reported that Malaysia has 31 out of the 42 types of wetlands identified by the Ramsar Convention. Currently, there are seven sites in the country totalling 134,182 hectares that have been designated under the Ramsar Convention as Wetlands of International Importance. Nonetheless, many of us may not realise the importance of wetlands and how dependent we are on the wetlands for their various ecosystem services.
.
This World Wetlands Day, let’s reflect on the theme ‘Wetlands and Water’. Do you know that wetlands act as natural filters to purify water by removing pollutants such as sediments and toxins? Are you aware that wetlands can hold excess water and thus, help to control floods? These unique abilities are found particularly in peat swamp forests (PSF) which are a type of wetlands.
.
In Setiu Wetlands, Terengganu, WWF-Malaysia conducts studies to build the case for improved management of PSF. Take a closer look at PSF through these images and appreciate their importance.
