We are proud to have 40 enthusiastic university students onboard WWF-Malaysia’s first virtual Water Vanguards Challenge 2020, powered by H&M, our corporate partner and supported by our communication partner, Illuminairre.

Over the 10-day challenge that commenced on 14 December 2020, the students explored and deliberated various water-related topics besides diligently executing daily assignments. Starting with a deep dive into where water comes from, water footprint and virtual water, they went on to learn about water resources and river basin management in Malaysia including water issues around wasteful consumption and pollution. Next, they examined sustainable fashion and zero waste lifestyle to reduce the impacts of waste on water resources and the environment. Last but not least, they gained exposure from real examples on raising voices and actions by youths for the environment, especially on water conservation.

We had a great line-up of guest speakers who imparted useful knowledge through their sharing of the related topics and issues. These included the Sustainability Manager of H&M Southeast Asia (Ms Marian Dang), agencies including Air Selangor (Ms Amanda Lee) and Selangor Water Resource Management Authority (En Ishak Kamaruzaman), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (Prof Dr Zulkifli Yusop), Universiti Malaya (En Affan Nasaruddin), water quality specialist (IR Dr Zaki Zainudin), social media influencers (Ms Melissa Tan and Ms Elena Almeida) and the WWF-Malaysia Eco Champion Award 2020 recipient (Mr Khou Jerome). It was a privilege having them and we are truly grateful. It is indeed assuring to see the strongly aspired participants who are our future leaders raring to now pursue actions for a better water future for Malaysia.
