The Covid-19 Pandemic Has Changed Our Lives In Man..

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed our lives in many ways and for us in WWF-Malaysia, we too are not spared. For a few months, planned field work to project sites in the hinterlands of Sarawak could not be carried out.

.

Thankfully in August when inter-district travel was allowed in Sarawak, the wildlife conservation team sprang back into action to retrieve camera traps set in a forest management unit (FMU) in the central region. To the team’s dismay, we lost a few camera-traps to thefts and vandalism. Amid the dilemma of losing field equipment and important data on the area’s biodiversity, remaining camera-traps gave hope and excitement to the team and FMU.

.

Some of the wildlife captured on camera were a baby pangolin riding on its mother’s back – a first for the team, clouded leopard and sun bear. These rare images are crucial evidence or indicators – that it has high conservation values. Data collected will be used to assist the concerned FMU to develop a wildlife management plan to better conserve these protected species. Before heading back to civilization, the team installed remaining camera traps in different sites of the FMU, with hopes to retrieve them in January with more wildlife images.
