HAPPY TALES: GERRY, A FRIEND FOR LIFE
Catherine: “Today marks 10 years since we adopted Gerry, a Husky-Labrador from SPCA. I had wanted a dog for a really long time. Growing up, my parents brought me to SPCA so it was a given that we would adopt an animal there if we could.
One dog (Gerry) caught my dad’s attention. He stood at his cage door, barking and wagging his tail excitedly. I remember my dad telling him to sit and Gerry sat, and my dad was so surprised that he went, “See? He’s such a good boy!” before squatting next to him to pat him, only to get a big lick on his face. And that was it. We adopted Gerry on 10 October 2010.
We like to joke that Gerry tricked us into adopting him because he acts more like a cat than a dog. He hates hugs, cuddles, and cameras, and only comes to us for food and walks. 90% of the time, he ignores us. Regardless, he takes up a big space in our hearts (and in our house due to his size) and we still shower him with lots of love and attention.
During the circuit breaker, Gerry was diagnosed with kidney cancer in both kidneys. We were told he didn’t have much time left (from 1-6 months, or more). It’s been more than 4 months and this 12-year-old man is still running around, doing happy dances when he’s going on walks, and stealing food that’s left unattended.
Our time with Gerry may be coming to an end, but we’re grateful to have spent 10 solid years with a massive fluffy dog, and are even more grateful to have had the time to be with him when he was unwell, thanks to the circuit breaker.
Happy birthday/adoption day to our favourite doggo and here’s to many more months of getting our hibiscus flowers chewed off. 🐕”"
