Photo 1 of Tales by Lens takeover Education for Sustainable Development Malaysia by @stanley1121 My first visual is this juvenile praying mantis. Shy and playful, it kept hiding behind the grass and took me a while to take this shot. These carnivorous insects can grow up to six inches, and they usually prey on other insects or their own kind. They can turn their head 180 degrees to observe the surroundings with their two large compound eyes.

.

Praying mantises are also known to exhibit sexual cannibalism; the males are likely to be eaten by their partner. Praying mantises play an essential role in the environment and ecosystem, especially when it comes to controlling the growth of the pest population and preventing the pests from harming crops and plants.

Location: Grassland nearby housing area, Kuala Lumpur.
