Updates On Cucu, Rehomed Elderly Cat

My cousin, Lilian, asked for help in rehoming her domestic helper’s cat when the latter went back to the Philippines way back in August 2009. Lilian has 4 dogs and her helper looked after this cat, called Cucu. After the helper left, there was no one to look after Cucu anymore and Lilian wanted a better home for Cucu.

So, I blogged and around September 2009, we found a home for Cucu. Cucu was already at least 7 years old at that time. But being possibly of some breed (or cross-bred), there were many takers.

Fast forwarding now…to some happy updates:

From the adopter, Sharon:

Cucu is now heavier and her muscles are firmer. Her hair is longer and thicker which is probably due to the cold and rainy weather in last December. The still pictures are not sharp as they are taken by a camera phone and I apologized for that. Many of her pictures are taken when she was resting or having her siesta. It is near impossible to capture pictures of her when about and running. The best moments are when she hunts beetles and flies that occasionally enter our home.

Initially, Cucus was allocated a room downstairs but now she has worked her way up to the master bedroom. Every morning she would call to be let out of the bedroom. Her downstairs room is now her dayroom and she is free to roam wherever she wants. The only areas that are strictly out of bounds are the kitchen (because of the gas stoves) and the bathrooms. Now Cucu does not hide anymore, possibly she is familiar with her surroundings and doesnt feel threatened.

Initially, I would put kibbles in her bowl but I noticed that she doesnt finish them immediately. By the time Cucu finish the leftovers they have become slightly soft due to absorption of moisture from air. So I decided to feed her whenever she wants to eat and this little girl sure has her way of asking to be fed. She would rub hard against my hand with her head and then she would go to the kibbles container and does the same thing. She would eat on her own when I am busy but if I am relaxing she would want to be hand fed and she really loves to be pampered.

According to my children, Cucu has a habit of smelling and rubbing my nose with hers whenever Im sleeping which is likely her way of waking me up. And if that fails she would lie next to me and occasionally grooms my hair. The lovely thing about her is that she shares her hunt (mainly cockroaches as the lizards are near extinction thanks to Cucu). Whenever Im out of the house she would place her toy prey nest to the door so I would be able to see it the minute I enter the house. When David goes overseas, she would place her toy prey on his bedroom slippers. If his trip takes longer than 3 days she would lie next to his slippers. Very cute and touching.
