Today is World Animal Day (October 4), an annual global event uniting the animal protection movement. 👏
Not only on this important day but on every day of the year, animal lovers from across the globe have the opportunity to celebrate and empower much-needed change for the animals who walk alongside us.
Since our founding in 2003, Soi Dog Foundation has worked to raise the status of street animals in Asia. We want to create a world where they are no longer deemed as ‘dirty animals’ or ‘lower beings’ who face exploitation, abuse, cruelty and neglect. Soi Dog was the driving force behind the promulgation of Thailand’s first Animal Welfare Act in December 2014, making acts of animal cruelty a criminal offence punishable by up to two years’ imprisonment and/or a 40,000 THB (1,260 USD) fine. Previously, the maximum penalty was a mere 500 THB (less than 16 USD) fine under Criminal Law.
Despite this achievement, sentencing was overly lenient and acts of horrific animal cruelty continued to be perpetrated in the years that followed. For example, in 2016, a chicken stall owner attacked Kao, a dog that was chained up, repeatedly hitting him with a metal bar. He then covered Kao’s head with a sack and stabbed him in the neck and chest. Being chained up, he could not escape, and he died in a pool of blood. The accused was sentenced to just two months’ in a detention centre. In 2017, a German man, in a completely unprovoked attack, picked up a much-loved resident dog called Dum in a bar and slammed his body to the ground, breaking his legs and causing such severe internal bleeding that he died. The offender was fined 5,000 THB (158 USD) and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment suspended for one year (no custodial sentence).
In response, Soi Dog put pressure on the government by gathering 1.5 million signatures on a petition calling for heavier penalties against animal cruelty. Thailand still has a long way to go in enforcing these laws and fine-tuning the legislation, but we continue to fight for the authorities to uphold animal welfare to its highest standards.
