📣 All animals should be free from discomfort.
To mark #ResponsibleDogOwnershipMonth, we continue to highlight the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare’s (UDAW) ‘Five Freedoms’ which serve as universal guidance for the humane treatment of all sentient beings. Today, we’re looking at ‘Freedom from discomfort’ which is all about providing our dogs with a comfortable environment that is conducive to their needs.
Here at Soi Dog Foundation, even with no government funding, we aim to provide world-class care to street dogs who come into our shelter. Sadly, we have witnessed shelters in shocking condition in Thailand. For example, in early 2018 in the northeast of the country, over 3,000 dogs were impounded in a makeshift shelter by the authorities as a result of a panicked rabies scare. The facility was unable to cope with the enormous influx of terrified, traumatised dogs. In addition, there was a severe lack of food and medical care. Limited staff struggled to cope with such an overwhelming intake and, with none of the animals vaccinated, thousands died from diseases like distemper and parvovirus by the time Soi Dog Foundation had even been alerted to the situation. Thanks to the animal lovers who responded to our urgent appeal at the time, we were able to rescue and rehabilitate a number of the remaining dogs. Most of the dogs went on to our partner rescues in the US and Canada, and some were adopted locally. This was an important lesson to learn. Shelters are NOT the solution to the overpopulation of stray dogs in Thailand, nor in any crisis situation. The only ethical and the most effective way of managing the population is through a large-scale spay and neuter programme, or CNVR (Catch, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return).
