This year, Earth Overshoot Day falls on 22 August, three weeks later than last year. The later date this year is estimated to be a direct consequence of COVID-19-induced lockdowns around the world and their impact on wood harvests and CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion. While our hearts go out to all those who have lost loved ones or livelihoods during the pandemic, the COVID-19 crisis has shown that we are all capable of acting swiftly in the pursuit of a shared goal when we recognise that our lives and that of the people we love, may be at risk.
.
However, this improvement is a far cry from the change which is required to safeguard both ecological balance and people’s well-being. We are currently using resources as if we had 1.6 Earths. If the Earth is an apple tree, we’re not just eating the apples; we’re chopping down the tree. If we don’t change our consumption habits and keep chopping down the tree, our children and the future generations have only their imagination to rely on to know what an apple looks like. We need to make better choices in our lives, and help stop ecological overshoot. So, be an educated and responsible consumer and learn about potential sustainable choices.
