Did you know that butter can be made from the forests in Sarawak? The engkabang jantung (Shorea macrophylla) tree is endemic to Borneo and protected under the Sarawak Wild Life Protection Ordinance, 1998. However, rural communities may collect fruits for their own use or traditional practices.
.
Its fruits (illipe nuts) can be processed into food as they have a high oil content. The oil is used for cooking, making soap, as a massage oil and food spread (butter), and even for making chocolate! The butter is usually eaten with piping hot rice.
.
Sadly, traditional oil making is one of many dying practices which have been guiding indigenous peoples for generations to harvest and manage resources sustainably. With the erosion of such practices, we not only lose an important part of our heritage but also traditional knowledge on how to protect the environment.
