Freshwater is one of the essentials that rainforests provide us. Rainforests help maintain the water cycle. When forest areas are reduced, the forest contributes less moisture to form clouds in the atmosphere causing decline in rainfall. The forest also acts as natural sponges releasing water slowly into streams and rivers, besides filtering sediments from entering these water bodies. Hence, keeping forest intact safeguards water availability and quality.
.
The link between forests, rivers and water security was the focus of WWF-Malaysia’s #JourneyofWater in the Klang, Selangor, Langat and Muda river basins in 2018 and 2019. The participants, #WaterHeroes uncovered this key relationship on their journey from forested watershed upstream, and tracking the rivers to various beneficiaries downstream.
