Main threats to sea turtles are egg consumption and trade, unsustainable coastal development, incidental capture in fishing gear, pollution and climate change. Today, we would like to highlight why we should not litter, especially plastic-based items. Marine pollution from plastic waste is a significant threat to sea turtles and a global issue. For example, plastic bags look very similar to jellyfish. Plastics takes a very long time to degrade and can block intestines and even pierce the intestinal wall causing internal bleeding. The plastic in a turtle’s stomach can imitate the feeling of being full which may lead to them dying from starvation. Globally it is estimated that approximately 52% of all sea turtles have eaten plastic.

.

When sea turtles get entangled in plastic waste, they risk choking to death, losing limbs and causing serious injuries. Remember the footage of the turtle with a plastic straw stuck inside its nostril? This incident demonstrates that it is crucial to keep our environment clean and reduce our plastic waste. Plastic waste will eventually break down into smaller particles known as microplastics. These particles are so small, they get eaten by planktons and fish and get into our food chain. We are not only saving turtles, but our own lives too!
