Hello, fellow Malaysians! Have you ever heard of the olive ridley turtle or penyu lipas? The olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) is the smallest of all the sea turtles in Malaysia and gets its name from their olive green colour shell. The olive ridley is mostly omnivorous and feeds on shrimp, crabs, snail, jellyfishes and occasionally will eat algae and seaweed as well.
.
They are also one of two species of sea turtles that engage in unique “arribada” nesting activity, where large groups of females congregate simultaneously on the beach to nest. However, this mass nesting phenomenon only occurs in some parts of the world such as Mexico, Costa Rica and India.
.
In Malaysia, olive ridleys used to be found in Terengganu, Pahang, Penang and Perak. Their nesting season falls between March – August and they opt for a solitary nesting. The Malaysian nesting population has declined drastically by more than 95% to just a few nests recorded per year.
.
In conjunction with World Sea Turtle Day 2020, we seek your help to save the sea turtles of Malaysia by reducing ocean pollution, protecting their nesting habitat and by refusing to consume or buy eggs or products made of turtle parts. Small acts can lead to big impacts.
