#DYK the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) or locally known as ‘penyu belimbing’ is the only turtle without a hard bony shell? Among all of the turtle species, leatherback is a highly migratory species. It is also the largest sea turtle in the world, weighing at an average of 600kg. In Malaysia, this turtle is facing extinction and has declined about 99% since 1960. Rantau Abang was known for having the most abundant leatherback nesting in the world with 10,000 nests per year back in the 1950s. Sadly, the last nesting of the leatherback in Terengganu was in 2017 with only 2 nests and none of the eggs hatched.
