Now, the first genus in Family Geoemydidae for today’s #TaxaTuesday is Batagur, which contain 6 species, B. affinis, B. baska, B. borneoensis, B. dhongoka, B. kachuga & B. trivittata.
Batagur spp. are one of Asia’s largest freshwater turtles. They possess sexual dimorphism, the male Batagur also shows obvious colour change on their heads and bodies during the breeding season. Females lay their eggs in sandbanks. After laying its eggs, the female will rise and fall on the surface to compact the sand, causing rhythmic sound which gives rise to their Malay name, “Tuntung.”
Out of the 6 Batagur species, 5 of them are at the high risk of extinction (The World’s 25+ Most Endangered Tortoises and Freshwater Turtles). Two of the species, B. affinis (Southern River Terrapin) & B. borneoensis (Painted Terrapin), can be found in Malaysia. These species are critically endangered because of exploitation of their eggs and loss of sandbanks due to sand mining activities.
Stay tuned for more #TaxaTuesday!
