Let’s continue with the next #TaxaTuesday, introducing the forth Genus, Heosemys (Asian Pond Turtles), which contain 4 species, H. annandalii, H. depressa, H. grandis & H. spinosa.
The 3 species of Heosemys that can be found in Malaysia are H. annandalii (Yellow-Headed Temple Turtle), H. grandis (Giant Asian Pond Turtle) & H. spinosa (Spiny Turtle).
For today’s #TaxaTuesday, we will first focus on the Yellow-Headed Temple Turtle. This species is listed as endangered, due to trade exploitation and habitat loss, under the IUCN Red List. Its name is derived from the distinct yellow bands on its heads and the custom of Buddhist placing them in temple ponds. They are generally herbivorous with jaws displayed distinct zig-zag jaw line.
Next week’s #TaxaTuesday, we will continue on the Giant Asian Pond Turtle. Come back next week to learn about them!
