The sixth Genus of Malaysia freshwater turtle in this week’s #TaxaTuesday is Notochelys (Flat-Shelled Turtles), monotypic genus with only 1 species (N. platynota).
N. platynota, also known as Malayan Flat-Shelled Turtle, is listed as ‘Vulnerable’ under the IUCN Red List. Their population decline due to trading and habitat loss.
The common name, Flat-Shelled Turtle, derived from its flattened upper shell. The Malayan Flat-Shelled turtle is one of the species to have more than 5 vertebral scutes. The colour changes as it grows older. The hatchlings are brightly coloured compared to adults.
