It’s #TaxaTuesday and the last Genus of freshwater turtles found in Malaysia is Siebenrockiella.
Siebenrockiella used to be monotypic, having only S. crassicollis (Black Marsh Turtle). Then, another species, S. leytensis (Philippine Forest Turtle) was added under this Genus.
S. crassicollis is native to Malaysia. Black Marsh turtle is listed as ‘Vulnerable’ under the IUCN Red List. Their population is declining due to direct exploitation and habitat loss.
Black Marsh turtles are also known as “Smiling terrapin,” due to its upwardly curved jaw line. The posterior margin of its carapace is strongly serrated. The distinguishing feature of a Black Marsh turtle is the light cream or yellow spot behind each eye. The light markings often fade out in adult males, but will be retained in adult females.
In next week’s #TaxaTuesday, we'll talk about the terrestrial turtles, i.e. tortoises! Don’t miss it!
