Water hyacinth / Keladi bunting (invasive sp.)
Native to sub-tropical South America, this free-floating aquatic plant has thick waxy leaves and conspicuous air bladders in their stems. Water hyacinth reproduces by fragmentation of stolons, forming daughter plants, and seed production. Due to their high reproduction rate, these plants forms dense mat covering the surface of the open water, affects water flow and restricting sunlight penetration required by algae and plankton in the water. This reduces food supply for fishes and other aquatic wildlife. High production of dead material produced causes oxygen depletion in the water, excessive use of oxygen by bacteria and fungi in degradation process.
Water hyacinth also happens to be one of the food source for river terrapins. River terrapins play an important ecological role in our rivers. It consumes water hyacinth, keeping this invasive aquatic plant population under control. Allowing our native aquatic wildlife to strive and our rivers clean and healthy.
