We know we have a long way to go to cultivate this level of kindness to animals in our elected authorities. That is why all I’ve ever asked for when I have any opportunity to speak with the power-that-be is to please spare our ear-notched animals. Not asking for anymore than that. Not asking for better management of the pounds, not asking for subsidised spay-neuter at government vets, not asking for a mobile spay-neuter clinic for the strays. Just asking them to spare our ear-notched animals and support our efforts at CNRM. But even that has been rejected or cold-storaged with the typical “We’ll look into it”.
Honestly, sometimes I think it’s a waste of time casting my vote. While they prioritise projects for humans, humans, humans and only humans, they forget the very survival of this planet depends on how we treat ALL living beings. They forget how inter-connected we are and how we, as the so-claimed more intelligent and capable species, have a RESPONSIBILITY to look after all living beings. Not just our own kind.
But animals don’t vote, you see? If only animals could vote (and believe me, the animal population outnumber us by leaps and bounds), I’ll bet you’d have no-kill animal sanctuaries all over town, set up within months! And government-sponsored pet hotels, and classy 24-hour hospitals for animals, especially the strays (‘coz there’s more of them than pets), etc.
As the oft-quoted Gandhi saying, “The moral progress of a nation can be judged by how its animals are treated”, we await the day when our elected authorities get there.
And while we are waiting, we, the little people at the grassroots, will show them the way.
If our elected authorities choose not to see, that would be their loss, not ours.
We don’t have any resources to build sanctuaries, pet hotels or hospitals, but we can spay-neuter that one cat in our back alley, we can rehome that poor little puppy in the drain.
For every single animal that we spay-neuter or remove from the streets, we have saved thousands from unwanted and unwarranted suffering.
