Some good news to end the year. We have just received word that Malaysia's new Animal Welfare Act 2015 which was tabled and passed in Parliament last July will be gazetted tomorrow December 29th 2015. This Act is much more comprehensive than the previous one and fills in huge gaps in the previous act which left animals unprotected and activists unable to help them. For the first time in Malaysia, pet owners can be prosecuted for not providing medical care, adequate food, water, and shelter. Abandonment is also now a crime. Animal abusers face jail time and/or fines of RM20,000 to RM100,000. However without enforcement the Act is nothing. When reporting cases of cruelty to the police or the Department of Veterinary Services try to back up your claims with evidence such as photos to encourage them to take action.

The act calls to promote the welfare and responsible ownership of animals.
