The SPCA stands ready to work with the AVA on re-homing adoptable strays. The opportunity to give these dogs a second chance presents itself now, and so we call on dog lovers to step forward to help the SPCA re-home the dogs. We will be featuring these animals on our facebook and website as and when they come in, so please look out for them. The SPCA will sterilise, vaccinate, micro-chip and license adoptable dogs, as is SPCA practice, and adopters will pay for these costs.
While sterilisation plays a big part in managing the stray population, we also call on the AVA to step up pressure on puppy mills to micro-chip all their puppies and dogs, AND pet stores to licence the puppies at the point of sale. Accountability for the ownership of the puppy is thus established. Under the PET SHOP LICENCE CONDITIONS (1), when a dog is sold, the shop must apply for the dog licence for the buyer and lodge the microchip number of the dog with the AVA. By NOT doing so, the pet shop demonstrates dereliction of responsibility and contravenes this condition.
Abandonment is a problem the SPCA continues to face. The SPCA will step up education and advocacy as means to educate dog owners to be responsible to their dogs in sickness and in health, and not dump their pets when the latter become an inconvenience.
