#BanWildlifeMarkets: Global support should no longer be ignored. On the day of the 73rd World Health Assembly, when policies about our future health are decided, we’re asking the WHO to address the cause of the outbreak of #covid19 and ban wildlife markets.
There is increasing evidence and support from decision-makers, the public and press supporting a ban:
✅ In March, the United Nations’ biodiversity chief openly called for a global ban on wildlife markets
✅ in April, WHO’s Director-General Dr. Tedros said that ‘Governments must rigorously enforce bans on the sale and trade of wildlife for food.’ Only to REVERSE its position a month later.
✅ The Environment Commissioner of the European Commission recently said ‘The European Union will step up efforts to control wildlife trading and make factory farming more sustainable, given that both issues have played a role in the coronavirus pandemic’
✅Scientists warned of a pandemic years ago. Why didn’t decision-makers listen?
✅ #BanWildlifeMarkets became a trending hashtag, with thousands of people sharing the message and asking for change.
Until we meaningfully crack down on the trade and consumption of wildlife, and hold those who can stop it accountable, zoonotic disease outbreaks will continue to threaten people around the world.
Also commonly found at these markets are dogs and cats. The risk of transmitting dangerous diseases from these animals is no less than the risk of transmission from wildlife. Soi Dog urges @WHO to consider including a recommendation on the ban of consumption of dog and cat meat, as well as the trade in wildlife, and send a message to the world that they are willing to do everything in their power to prevent further outbreaks of zoonotic diseases.
