Hi everyone, I’m Vivien Yeo, a Freshwater Conservation Assistant based in Sarawak Office.
.
Here’s my throwback on my first shorebird census trip to Belawai, Sarawak last February. The census is part of WWF-Malaysia’s work to gather data for Rajang-Belawai-Paloh conservation work with Sarawak Government. Thanks to guidance from Noraisah Majri (SARAWAK FORESTRY), Daniel Kong and Rose Au (Malaysian Nature Society Kuching Branch), and my colleague, Ezen Chan, I was able to gain new knowledge about shorebirds.
.
Our adventure started early before sunrise as we travelled through rivers and estuaries to get to our survey site, a large mudflat area where the shorebirds feed and roost. At first, it took us a while to notice the birds were as some of them were really small.
.
We took a quick scan using binoculars before setting up the bird spotting scope from afar to count and observe them. It was really interesting to observe their behaviours. They are undeniably adorable! Different species of birds gathered at the same spot to feed on worms and other invertebrates found on the mudflats. When the tide started to rise, large flocks of them flew closer.
.
What had me truly mesmerized was the sight of Caspian Terns lining up in a row above the water’s edge. They took turns to dive into the water to catch their prey! Can you imagine birds know how to line up to get their food? It was also really exciting to be able to see the Asian Dowitcher, Chinese Egret, Far Eastern Curlew, Malaysian Plover, etc. at the survey site.
.
Sadly, loss of the protective mangrove forests has caused environmental changes in mudflat habitats, which slowly threatens shorebirds’ feeding and roosting sites. It is important to conserve their habitats so we don’t end up losing these important species in our ecosystem.
