World Migratory Bird Day

Today is World Migratory Bird Day! This day highlights the need to conserve migratory birds and protect their habitats.

.

Yes, some birds migrate just like us humans looking for greener pastures. These birds fly across incredible distances leaving their homes or breeding grounds to warmer habitats when their breeding sites become unfavourable due to low temperature. Some of them cross country boundaries and some cross oceans.

.

It is mysterious how they rely on their senses to find their flyway. They just know where to go including suitable habitats where they can stop to rest and refuel. This video shows a flock of migratory birds that stopped over at Belawai, Sarawak last February. 😉

.

However, today the birds face threats from human – habitat loss and pollution. Can you imagine after the long journey, the hungry and exhausted birds find their favourite stopover site has been destroyed or polluted?
