SPCA’S DR CHOW: VET & FOSTERER

After attending to multiple cases in the day, Dr Chow (SPCA’s locum vet) starts his ‘night shift’ of fostering animals at home. He’s one of several SPCA staff who are going the extra mile to help needy animals during the time of COVID-19.

Dr Chow: As a veterinarian, I try to foster animals who need more complicated care (swipe for pics). We do not have overnight staff so sometimes we’re not comfortable leaving them alone in the clinic.

In the shelter, one staff is responsible for multiple animals. In a home, fostered animals have more dedicated care. This is helpful for conditions that are more intensive. Some cats with external wounds need daily wound cleaning and bandage change, while others need daily medication. Cats with skin infections like ringworm recover promptly after receiving medication.

There was a 2-month-old kitten with a rare condition — air was leaking from his lungs and he kept swelling up like a balloon. I brought him home over the weekend because he needed air to be extracted from under the skin frequently with needles and syringes to breathe properly. Unfortunately, the condition was so severe that the kitten didn’t make it.

Currently, I’m fostering Popcorn (last photo), who is not toilet-trained so I’m doing some dog obedience training too!

Fostering can be tiring. Yet, it’s heartwarming to contribute in my little ways to help these animals recover and find new homes. Being an animal foster parent is a unique experience unlike any other. It allows me to care for one animal at a time. Sometimes, that is enough.
