Thick Cable Wire Snares, Spent Bullet Casings, Cag..

Thick cable wire snares, spent bullet casings, cage traps – these are all evidence of poachers’ presence in the forest. They lurk and lie in wait for months – all to get their hands on high-value species, of which the most highly prized is the critically endangered Malayan tiger.

.

In illegal wildlife markets, every part of the tiger is for sale, from whisker to tail – in the name of the mystical belief that owning, wearing or consuming tiger parts can give power and protection to the buyer. There is no reliable scientific data to prove this, but as long as there is demand, the poachers will hunt and the tiger will continue to lose its life to illegal wildlife trade.

.

Poaching is often orchestrated by transnational crime syndicates that profit in the millions and undermine the security of local communities. Unfortunately, there is often limited funding and manpower resources for guarding protected areas even in countries where tigers live.

.

The fight against poaching is a never-ending battle. In the last five years alone, WWF-Malaysia’s field teams have managed to deactivate more than 250 active snares, which is equivalent to saving more than 250 animals including tigers and other endangered species. Close to a thousand other old snares were also recorded within this period, and many more would have remained undiscovered. These figures highlight the severity of this threat, and the urgency to save the Malayan tiger.
