For the first time, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs in China has stated that dogs and cats are “companion animals” and should not be considered livestock. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/china-dog-meat-trade-ban-cats-coronavirus-wuhan-wet-market-wildlife-a9457426.html
This announcement, and the omission of dogs and cats from the country’s National Catalogue of Livestock and Poultry Genetic Resources, is sending a message that we hope will be heard across Asia: dogs and cats are not for consumption.
We have been imploring Vietnam to follow suit and have long urged countries who still view the brutal slaughter and consumption of these animals for their meat as normal, to think again.
Despite the inaugural Hanoi Grand Prix being cancelled due to the global health crisis, the killing and consumption of thousands of dogs and cats in the Vietnamese capital continues unabated. But this news from China shows us what can happen when we come together to bring about change.
