SPCA’S ED MESSAGE
Dear Friends,
I hope that you and your loved ones are keeping safe in these challenging times. Prior to the latest set of measures announced on Friday (3 April), we had been doing our best to protect our people and visitors at SPCA through various measures such as temperature taking and physical distancing. We had also cancelled or postponed all events, adoption drives, and group visits to the SPCA, including our biggest fundraiser of the year, our Tux for Tails gala dinner, that was meant to raise funds for our veterinary services.
[Our animal welfare work]
I assure you that the SPCA team is committed to keeping our animal welfare services running. In recent weeks, despite the escalating pandemic, our staff and volunteers have been turning up at the SPCA, caring for our animals, walking the dogs, rescuing animals in distress, administering treatment to sick and injured animals, and investigating animal cruelty and welfare cases. They are the unsung heroes working behind the scenes to make a difference in the lives of animals.
From 7 April onwards, only our critical animal welfare services will continue running. We will continue rescuing animals and the animals in our shelter will be well taken care of. Adoptions will have to temporarily cease. If necessary, we will put out calls for fostering to help us cope with the continued intake of rescued animals.
While we are certainly concerned about our health and that of the wider community, we have to consider the animals too. Our animal welfare work, especially critical services, must go on. We may have to make further adjustments as the situation evolves to protect our staff and volunteers, but we will be there for animals that need us the most.
[Managing public anxieties]
We have been closely monitoring developments around the world. So far, we have put out two COVID-19 related advisories, most recently after Hong Kong announced that a dog tested positive for the virus. We have advised the public that they are no safer if they surrender their pets and that sensible precautions will keep them and their pets healthy. There have been some concerns that people might start abandoning their pets. Thankfully, to date, we have not seen an increase in pet abandonment.
[Challenges on the horizon]
With the cancellation of our gala dinner and numerous other events, and the present economic climate, we expect donations to take a significant hit. Adoptions will be affected. We are also preparing for potential supply chain disruptions that might affect our operations, such as a shortage of medical supplies. There will likely be other challenges we will have to face. But we take heart that we are not alone and that there will be many, including you, still looking out for animals come what may. The SPCA has always been a large community of people working together to care for all creatures great and small. So we thank you for your continued support.
Finally, if there is anything we can do for you, please let us know and we will try our best to help. All of us have been affected in one way or another by COVID-19, some of course much more than others. So let’s stay united and ride this storm together.
On behalf of everyone at the SPCA, I wish you and your family the best of health. Stay safe and take care.
Warmest regards,
Dr Jaipal Singh Gill
Executive Director
