Fish Presence, Species Diversity And Distribution ..

Fish presence, species diversity and distribution are key indicators of stream health and the sensitivity of the stream habitats to disturbance. During the SWSE 2020, UMT’s fish research team surveyed the upstream of Sg. Setiu and Sg. Bintang located in the catchment area of Setiu Wetlands to document a fish inventory.
.
They collected about 26 species of commonly known fish which often occur in small streams in Peninsular Malaysia. None of the species is classified as endangered except for one species of fighting fish, Betta kuehnei that is also endemic to the northeast of Peninsular Malaysia.
.
Other species consist mostly cyprinids (barbs and carps) and silurids (catfishes). Although very few ornamental fish were recorded, most of the species are sensitive to poor water quality.
.
The findings are vital in recommending the appropriate protection and management of the water, habitat and fish resources in the rivers that were surveyed.
