ISN’T IT BEAUTIFUL WHEN BOTH PEOPLE AND ANIMALS CAN BE HELPED AT THE SAME TIME?

We successfully repatriated 51 Indian star tortoises who were victims of the #IllegalWildlifeTrade in #Singapore, back home in November 2018.

Anbarasi Boopal (Anbu), our Deputy Chief Executive visited them in November 2019 at the protected nature reserve managed by our valued partner Wildlife S.O.S India.

She shares, “After more than 9 hours of journey through beautiful landscapes in a train, jeep and a motorbike, I was excited and anxious at the same time to see how the tortoises were doing. Meeting and watching the dedicated team at work who manages this project really put my mind at peace. Not only were the tortoises doing well, acclimatising in their soft release site, but also were monitored professionally. What is more beautiful is that this project involves locally employed staff from the community who used to collect tortoises for meat and wildlife trade, now working full-time to protect these animals, patrol the area and actively remove other wildlife traps and raise awareness in the community on coexistence. I was impressed with their level of awareness and passion in the right direction. Isn’t it the best feeling when you can help both animals and people at the same time?”

We were able to track and locate a few of our tortoises who had transmitters fit for this purpose. After ten more months of monitoring, it will be a final goodbye! The tortoises’ feeding behaviour and body weights are monitored periodically by the amazing Wildlife SOS personnel. This radio tracking project is to evaluate the programme and build a solid foundation for our future repatriations.

However, over the past year we have rescued more and now about twenty Indian star tortoises call ACRES their home away from home.
