The Setiu Wetlands Scientific Expedition (SWSES) themed “Valuing Nature for Better Future” that commenced on 24 February 2020 marks one of WWF-Malaysia’s major conservation milestones in Setiu Wetlands, Terengganu.
This 4-day expedition is co-organized with our strategic partner, Terengganu State Park Management Council with financial support from our corporate partner, CIMB Islamic. The SWSES brings together experts and researchers from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin, Terengganu Forestry Department, Terengganu National Parks and Wildlife Department, and Terengganu Science and Creativity Centre to explore Setiu Wetlands’ uniqueness and biodiversity importance.
Researchers will gather and record vital data through observations and assessments of the wetlands’ flora and fauna, land use, hydrology and water quality, and edu-tourism potential for integrating Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning for students and visitors.
As a follow-up to WWF-Malaysia’s 2016 SWSES, the expedition aims to generate updated biodiversity data, and provide vital information and recommendations towards protecting additional areas for future gazettement as Setiu Wetlands State Park (SWSP).
